Natural Athlete’s Foot Cure
We are well into the sports season for many. Football, volleyball, and softball are in full swing with basketball and wrestling are gearing up. For this family, the “big game” isn’t sports. The starting of the engines of the combine, tractors, and semi-trucks remind us that are we are being called to do a major responsibility of feeding the world. I know. It sounds a little dramatic. Let’s just say that sometimes harvest can be taxing and exhausting on the brain and the body for us all.
So what does both sports and harvest have in common? Athlete’s Foot. Ok, you can laugh now. Today, let’s learn more about Athlete’s Foot and fungal skin infections and how we can take care of it naturally.
What is Athlete’s Foot?
Usually associated with sports, Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that grows in the skin of the feet and in between the toes. It is easily transferred through physical contact like wearing someone else’s shoes, showering at the gym, or using an infected towel or clothing. It is very contagious.
A fungal infection can also happen to people; whose feet become sweaty and confined to tightfitting shoes. The fungal infection can start to itch, burn, and even sting. It usually is accompanied by a scaly reddish color rash. I can’t tell you how many times I accidentally step into something wet in a field and then have to have wet feet for the rest of the day while driving the tractor.
You may choose to fight the fungal infection with an anti-fungal medication that you can buy at your local store or pharmacy. If the infection reoccurs, you can chose prescription medicine also. But, if you would like to try an herbal home remedy first, then keep reading on how you can make your own at home.
What Natural Herbs, Spices, and Foods Stop Athlete’s Foot?
There are a variety of herbs, spices, and foods that are effective at easing the itchy sore symptoms of a fungal infection on the foot. I will highlight a few of my favorites below:
Tea Tree Oil: Topically, Tea Tree Oil is used for skin surface infections as well as an antiseptic for cuts and abrasions. In a 1992 research study, topical application of Tea Tree Oil seems comparable to tolnaftate 1% cream for relieving athlete’s foot symptoms. Application of Tea Tree oil solution appears to produce both clinical improvement and a mycological cure in 48% to 50% of patients in the study after four (4) weeks of treatment.
Cloves: Cloves has the property called, “Eugenol.” This is a mild anesthetic and analgesic property. When applied topically, cloves can depress sensory pain receptors.
Calendula: Topically, Calendula is used as an anti-inflammatory and for poorly healing wounds, burns, and ulcers. In addition, Calendula is an astringent, anti-septic, and detoxifier. It is probably the top herb to help heal mild skin problems.
Thyme: Thyme’s anti-septic and antioxidant properties make it a great herb to use for the immune system especially with fungal infections. Thyme active ingredient is Thymol. Thymol has the ability to fight fungal infections.
Turmeric: I’m thinking Turmeric should be more famous. It is an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-bacterial herb. When applied to the skin, it can be used for a number of skin conditions including psoriasis and fungal infections to help reduce itching.
Listed below are two separate herbal remedies to decrease or kill a fungal infection on the feet. You can use essential oils, dehydrated, or fresh herbs as ingredients. If you chose fresh or dehydrated herbs, you will have to soak the herbs in a carrier oil for several days to a week before using.
Tea Tree Herbal Essential Oil Wipes
1 drops of Tea Tree oil
1 drops of Clove essential oil
1 drops of Calendula essential oil
1 drops of Thyme essential oil
Mix Tea Tree, Clove, Calendula and Thyme essential oils together with 1 Tablespoon of an essential oil carrier. My favorite carrier oil is a coconut oil. Take a cotton round or ball and wipe the mixture onto the feet and in-between the toes each day. Let it dry.
If you would like to use fresh or dehydrated Cloves, Calendula, and Thyme herbs, you may. Just make sure to soak them with the Tea Tree oil and carrier oil for several days before applying. Strain the herbs from the oil before using. (I actually prefer soaking the herbs for a week.)
Turmeric Herbal Rub
1 teaspoon of Turmeric
3 drops of Calendula essential oil
1 drop of Thyme essential oil
Mix the Turmeric, Calendula, and Thyme together with 2 Tablespoons of an essential oil carrier. Coconut oil is again my favorite carrier oil. But, you can use any carrier oil like olive oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, avocado oil, and grapeseed oil. Take a cotton round or ball and wipe the mixture onto the feet and in-between the toes each day.
Please note that Turmeric can stain your foot temporarily a burnt orange color and permanently stain cloth. If you use this mixture, I suggest that you use an old soak over your foot after the mixture is applied and sleep. Oh sleep. It is such a good thing and great healing time.
